Dragons are to be found in mythologies all over the world. Their meaning is ambivalent since, being winged, they symbolize celestial creative power, while from the dragon's mouth pours the fire of destruction and regeneration. This symbolic dualism is overcome, according to western tradition, by the dragon's death at the hands of a hero saint (the triumph of light over darkness). The East, instead, has the dragon dance which brings on the rain (union of sky and earth). This is why the dragon is also a symbol of exaltation and good fortune.
